The
usual suspects...
WHAT KIND
of group are we? How we answer that question will have a bearing
on whom we attract. This principle applies to all sorts of different
groups, not just Silver Street Mission. |

We're all different!

Baptist Cartoon...>> |
Still, it's an important question
for us, of course. Who are we? How will people view us? What
should we emphasise and what should we correct?
One way of defining the group
is by occupation. For example, we have eight regular attenders
who are currently employed three in professional or semi
professional positions, one labouring, one in technical support
and three in clerical positions. We also have six regulars who
are pensioners, and two others who have other employment situations
(no... not bank robbers!)

Between Easter and
Pentecost
|
EASTER
WAS a great time for the early disciples. From seeing their Master
crucified, they went on to seeing him alive and victorious over
all the evil which had been arrayed against him. But something
was still lacking. |
Today's
church is in a similar situation. We know the facts of Easter,
but we lack the power of Pentecost. An effective church needs
both.
Smith Wigglesworth
(it is a real name!) observed that many Christians pray in effect
for a feeling; he commented that this is not God's way of working.
When we know the fact and act on it, then the feeling may follow;
but, to wait for a feeling is futile and a waste of time.

Deaths
Silver Street Mission is saddened
to learn of several deaths during the past month. All have distressed
the congregation, because If one member suffers, the whole
body suffers. Gloria
Goff is saddened by the death of her brother-in-law, Ken Austin,
on 23 March. Ken had been ill with cancer for several months,
and declined severely in recent weeks. Our sincere condolences
to Junie Austin, their daughter, Debbie, and other family members
including Gloria.
Sydney Baptists are also sad that Miss Dulcie Oldfield died
in mid March. A longtime writer of Sunday School materials,
a keen children's worker, and a valued member of the Home Ministries
Auxilliary, Dulcie was also a close friend of Gloria Goff.
Many of Marrickvilles churches have lost a friend with
the death, in her 90s, of Mrs Kate Shelley on 28 March. Mrs
Shelley attended this church for several years in the 1980s and
1990s before returning to St Clements Church and then entering
a nursing home. Up to the last few weeks she was a keen prayer
for missions. Her son, Wal, was also involved here in the early
and mid 1980s. We extend condolences to her entire family.
What's on?
APRIL IS another Visitors Month,
with Pastor Manny from the Filipino Church at Blacktown as our
scheduled speaker on the first Sunday of the month at 10 am.
The service is followed by a shared lunch.
We are keen to meet a wider range of people, and have gained
greatly from hearing past guest speakers.
Also coming soon (August) is Miss Jacqueline Manila, who was
very well received here early last year. Several other speakers
have been approached, but confirmation is still awaited, and
one or two others are still to be contacted. |

Pastor Manny has spoken at
several Youth nights here, and also on occasions when Peter Green
was away. We all look forward to what he has to say. Why not
join us for this occasion?
FELLOWSHIP EVENTS
Fellowship outings are
held on the last Saturday of most months. Outings this year have
been to Watsons Bay, Cherrybrook and Manly.
The 28 April outing is not yet fully planned, but will be a good
time of fellowship and enjoyment. Keep the date free, and keep
in touch for more information.

VARIED SUCCESS AT EASTER
The Easter program was of varied success. We shared in a combined
service with the Uniting and Church of Christ Churches at the
Uniting Church, and people generally spoke highly of the way
it ran and the challenges in the semidramatical presentation
of the events of Jesus crucifixion. |
However, due to unsettled weather
on Easter Sunday, the planned outdoors service was not held.
Unfortunately, at least one person missed out on worship on that
day because of the late change in venue.
LEAFLETTING PROGRAM
A positive of the Easter period was the fellowship enjoyed by
a number of the church people while dropping leaflets in the
South Marrickville area. Although only a small number of dwellings
were reached, it was a first for our work in this part of our
Local Government Area. Some discussion has taken place about newspaper
advertising, and, of course, our website is a way of reaching
people (see article below).
We have also talked with the Uniting and Church of Christ pastors
about how our advertising can be combined to increase its effectiveness.
MISSION NEWS
Other print-based outreach includes this Mission News.
About 20 copies are collected and around 50 copies are posted.
One postal recipient has requested extra copies to hand to Christian
friends who enjoy the reading.

A worldwide presence
and a new address
OUR WEBSITE moves into a new
era at the beginning of this month when it acquires its own domain
name. Initially this means that visitors will only have to type
www.atsilverstreet.com into their browser instead of the
old www.pnc.com.au/~pspete1. However, it also means that
a more interesting site will be developed over coming months.
